When lowering the weights (relaxation), it says to inhale, and when coming up (contraction), to exhale. Which one is correct?

It seems that lifting above 25 kilos is the hardest when lifting from the ground to above the knees and then from the knees to the shoulders. I almost blacked out while lifting from the knees to the shoulders.
