Doing this with the Smith machine makes the weight go up much higher. It definitely seems like having support for the back reduces the strain a lot.

Keep lifting the lower side of the waist up, and if you want to add more load, adjust the balance by raising and lowering your arms.

For those wanting an option to add weight, there is a "plate back extension" exercice. I've been replqcing this one with It. It dosent have a demo or instructions, but it has the option to add weight.
